January is National Radon Action Month: The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment Department offers free short-term test kits.

Long-term radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer among smokers. Radon is an odorless, colorless, radioactive gas caused by the breakdown of uranium. Uranium is found mostly in rock formations but can also be found in soil and water. Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through the miniscule cracks in your home’s foundation or small spaces around utility pipes.

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, about 13,800 people are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the U.S. yearly, and about 4,290 people die of the disease. African Americans and Latinas have an increased risk of developing cervical cancer. Fortunately, when cervical cancer is found early, 92% of people have a five-year survival rate! The Weld County Health Department and Women’s Wellness Connection encourage women ages 21-74 to start the new year with a conversation with their health care provider about cervical cancer prevention and screening. Many cervical and other related cancers can be prevented by getting an HPV immunization, which is most effective when given to boys and girls ages 11-12 but can be given up to age 45.
