*FCPS announces plan for new community advisory group*
In October 2020, Fort Collins Police Services began a major strategic planning process to better align agency efforts with the needs of the community. During this process, leaders identified the benefit of forming an external advisory group to help continuously improve communication, outreach, and service.
This volunteer group will collaborate with the agency to evaluate engagement and service delivery, with an emphasis on Communities of Color, LGBTQIA+ and historically underserved populations.
βWe recognize that different groups have unique barriers to trust with law enforcement," said FCPS Chief Jeff Swoboda. "Our hope is that this program will help us better understand experiences, fears, intersectional issues, and obstacles so we can solve problems together and create a safer community for all."
The group will take a similar approach as the 2018 Community Trust Initiative, during which City staff and residents examined barriers to inclusion faced by immigrant community members in Fort Collins. That short-term initiative yielded valuable recommendations for different City service areas. The new community advisory group will partner specifically with FCPS to identify gaps, make suggestions, and provide ongoing perspective about police programs and local issues.
βWe frequently share data and have single-issue meetings, but what weβre missing is a regular group discussion with individuals who represent diverse parts of our community. We need to find out if the information we share is meaningful, relevant and accessible; how people want to engage with our agency; and what critical communication we may be overlooking,β said Chief Swoboda. "Without engaging all segments of the community, we fail."
More information about the community advisory group formation and opportunities to get involved will be shared in early 2021.

Firefighters have been busy this week going through ice rescue refresher training. It is that time of year when these calls come in and we want to make sure our crews are prepared. With the fluctuating
temperatures we have had recently, it is NOT SAFE to be on the ice. If you are near a body of water with your dog, make sure they are on a leash. Some of our calls have been for rescues of dogs that have fallen through the ice while chasing geese. If this does happen, DO NOT try to rescue the dog yourself. Call PFA and our trained firefighters will perform the rescue. Please follow the above guidance and don’t put yourself or our crews at risk.

A flag ceremony was held today for retiring Division Chief Ryan McLean at the PFA Headquarters. Chief McLean started his firefighting career with the Laramie, Wyoming Fire Department in 1995. In 2000, he was
hired by PFA. He has served as a firefighter, company officer, battalion chief, and was promoted to division chief in 2017. As the Support Services Division Chief, he oversaw the EMS Program, Fleet Maintenance, and Training Division. In an emotional ceremony, Chief McLean said, βI am very proud to have had the opportunity to be a professional firefighter in the community I grew up in.β Chief McLean is a 1991 graduate of Rocky Mountain High School. Chief McLean will still be serving the community as he transitions to his new career as the Senior Director of Prehospital Care for the UCHealth System. We will miss Chief McLean and wish him well in his new position.
