“When you give yourself wholly to a piece of ground, its goodness enters your bloodstream like an infusion. You will never be alone the same way again, and never quite dislocated. Your heart will grow down intoand back out of that ground like a tree.” -Pam Houston, Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country.

Today is National Package Protection Day (yes, such a thing exists). Did you know that in the early 1900s it was legal to mail your child? You read that correctly. Stamps could be attached to their clothing and they would travel from one destination to another with letter carriers. When it came to shipping a child off to their grandparents, postage was cheaper than a train ticket and letter carriers were (obviously) highly trusted public servants. #GivingTuesday this year is one of the most important days of the year for our local nonprofits. Covid has created additional need while also putting financial pressure on all non-profits. The economic uncertainty caused by the pandemic has caused many donors to dial back. Many nonprofits are also having to cancel their usual programs and fundraising events out of concern for public safety. Additionally, most nonprofits have limited financial reserves to carry them through lean times ahead, putting them in a difficult spot.
In the first quarter of 2020 nonprofits nationally saw a 6% loss in donations and could see more than $25 billion lost this year due to the pandemic that would have normally been given. In addition, 35% of Americans expect to donate less money, or no money, to charitable causes in the coming year and more than half (52%) of Americans do not plan to volunteer or will volunteer less next year.
Lyons nonprofits need our support more than ever. They help our community remain a great place to live and contribute to the quality of life we enjoy. Although money is needed by all nonprofits in order for them to continue their missions and programs there are other ways to help that don’t cost anything. If you can’t donate please consider volunteering, following on social media, and sharing their important work/needs.
On our website (link in the comments), we have created a list of some of the local nonprofits we work with and ways you can support them this Giving Tuesday. Please share this post to help spread the word.
