This photo is a humorous example of what NOT TO DO this Thanksgiving! Here are a few fire safety tips and facts to help you stay safe this holiday!

Turkey frying safety:
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), deep-frying a turkey on Thanksgiving can be RISKY! Every year deep-fryer fires are responsible for five deaths, 60 injuries, the destruction of 900 homes, and more than $15-million in property damage. The cooking oil used in these fryers can quickly cause a flash fire at 600°F- keep a close eye on your setup. Use your fryer outside and according to instructions. Keep the fryer away from structures. Never fry a frozen turkey.

Cooking safety:
Keep stovetop pan handles pointed in. Keep children away from cooking appliances and knives. Do not leave the kitchen while cooking. Have a fire extinguisher nearby. Ensure all smoke detectors are functional.

Thanksgiving fire facts:
Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day, the day before Thanksgiving, Easter, and Christmas Eve. In 2018, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,630 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving, the peak day for such fires. Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths. Cooking caused almost half of all reported home fires and home fire injuries, and it is the second leading cause of home fire deaths in 2014-2018. (according to NFPA)
