November 27 Train Derailment – Wellington Fire Protection District

November 27 Train Derailment - Wellington Fire Protection District 3

2020-11-28 10:41:31

Around 8:22 p.m., on Friday, November 27, Wellington Fire responded to a 911 call for a train derailment north of Wellington. When Engine 17 arrived on the scene, they saw a BNSF Railway engine had collided with an empty coal train parked at the Platte River Power Authority Rawhide Energy Station. The force of the collision knocked four empty coal cars off the railroad track. A drone was used to check for down power lines, fire, and potential hazmat concerns in hard to see spots from the air while firefighters searched from the ground. No issues of concern were found.

Three people were on board the train at the time. One crewmember was transported to a local hospital by UCHealth with minor injuries. The other two crewmembers were evaluated and released on scene. Wellington Fire remained on scene until 10:30 p.m. The cause of the derailment is unknown. The incident has been turned over to Platte River Power Authority and BNSF for further investigation.

Thank you to our partners at Poudre Fire Authority, Rawhide Emergency Response Team, and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office for your help.
