Scammers can be incredibly convincing, and people of all ages fall victim to their tricky ways. Stay scam smart and protect your family and finances!

💵 Many scammers use the phone to carry out their crimes by calling unsuspecting victims. If you get an unexpected call and the person demands payment or tries to “verify” personal information, hang up immediately.

💵 Beware of charitable calls soliciting money. If you get an unsolicited call and you're interested in making a donation, go online and do some research before contributing to the cause. If someone is aggressively pushing you to make a payment on the spot, asking you to buy gift cards to pay, or requesting money be wired, hang up.

💵 Scammers can “spoof” phone numbers to look like they’re coming from a legitimate caller. For example, caller ID may say they’re calling from the police department and they may even use a real officer’s name. However, police, the IRS, and other government organizations will never demand payment over the phone.

💵 Scammers may try to scare you into making an immediate payment to avoid consequences. They often demand payment in the form of gift cards. Don’t fall for it! Again, government agencies will never demand payment over the phone or via gift cards.

Last week, officers were dispatched to a gas station for a report of a vehicle theft that had just occurred. The victim went inside to make a purchase and left his dog in the car. During the brief time he was inside, a suspect got into his car and drove away. Officers located the vehicle driving around and attempted to make a traffic stop. However, the suspect immediately sped away at a high rate of speed. Police did not pursue out of safety concerns but successfully located the vehicle a short time later. It was abandoned in the southbound lanes of College Avenue near Trilby, and the dog was still inside, unharmed.

Concerned witnesses provided descriptions of a man and woman who had exited the vehicle and ran away on foot. Officers searched the area and located both people in a field nearby. The man was positively identified as the suspect who had originally stolen the vehicle. The woman was released when it was determined she wasn't involved in the theft and had just been picked up. The man was arrested and found to be in possession of controlled substances. He also had an escape warrant from the Department of Corrections. Great teamwork by all who worked to safely resolve this incident!

While Black Friday deals have been showing up in coupon form for weeks and Chris... 4

While Black Friday deals have been showing up in coupon form for weeks and Christmas decorations have been lighting up windows since Halloween, today marks the beginning of holiday shopping season. Remember these tips as you fill your cart (digital or real)!

🚗 If you're shopping in stores, make sure to store your purchases in your vehicle's trunk or other area that's not in plain sight. Shopping bags are an easy target for opportunistic thieves. Always lock your car doors, whether you've got gifts hidden inside or not. It's a good practice any time of year!

🔒 If you're shopping online, check to make sure the retail sites have secure payment pages. Look for the lock symbol in your browser bar before entering payment info. Stick with sites that start with https:// (emphasis on the S, which stands for "secure") to make sure your personal info isn't intercepted by cybercriminals.

📦 If you're expecting a package, keep an eye out for it or ask a neighbor to pick it up if you're going to be away from home all day. Always report suspicious activity like vehicles following delivery trucks or unfamiliar people removing packages from porches. If you have a delivery disappear, report it to police — even if the retailer refunds you. These reports help us better track trends and investigate theft sprees.

Check out the info from #ForFortCollins about supporting local businesses this year. We're all in this together. Stay safe, stay alert, and give us a call if you need help!
