Last night WSFR was called to a small fire at an oil well site at WCRs 66 and 27. The fire in a piece of equipment was quickly controlled and damage was limited to a small area of the well site. WSFR was able to confirm the fire’s control and verify there were not hotspots by the use of our new Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) or drone. The UAV’s purchase, and cost of training and licensing of personnel was paid for using a grant from the local oil and gas industry.

The use of UAVs in the fire service is rapidly expanding and WSFR is proud to be participating in this area of growth. There are countless opportunities for the use of UAV’s and last night WSFR’s UAV made its inaugural flight on an emergency scene. The UAV was used to evaluate the situation from a safe perspective while providing feedback to incident commanders regarding the effectiveness of the operational plan. WSFR’s UAV has both high-definition video and thermal imaging technology onboard. WSFR worked in partnership with the site operators to ensure the hazard had been completely mitigated and using the UAV allowed personnel from both agencies to safely visualize the situation before entering the scene.
