The Brighton Housing Authority (BHA) awarded $1,000 scholarships to three recent 27J graduates as part of its Career and College Launch program.

Out of 25 applicants, these students have demonstrated commitment and passion in their academic pursuits.

· Cassandra Maldonado-Ontiveros from Prairie View High School received the Maria Alvarado Memorial Scholarship, which recognizes students who display an upward trend in their academic performance. Ms. Maldonado-Ontiveros will be attending the University of Colorado Boulder this fall.
· Adam Kingsley from Brighton High School, SD27J received the Jessica Hara Memorial Scholarship, which recognizes students who have a passion for animals or community service. Mr. Kingsley was a volunteer at Lifeline Puppy Rescue, a local non-profit and no-kill animal shelter in Brighton, and plans to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. He will begin the next chapter in his academic career at Colorado State University.
· Angel Mollel, also from Brighton High School, was awarded the Terra Management Scholarship. She launched a non-profit organization called 1 Love, which is dedicated to helping Maasai people of Tanzania, where she was born and raised. Her efforts have helped send several children to school, build new homes for women, bring clean water and solar power to her village.

We are #27JProud of these bright young leaders and we wish them successful academic and professional careers ahead.

As an extension of Brighton Housing Authority’s award-winning Applicant Assistance Program, Career and College Launch promotes personal growth and economic self-sufficiency for youth by creating a college-going culture through post-secondary career and college readiness services. Participants receive guidance and resources as they pursue colleges and careers.

To encourage more Coloradans to continue their education, Governor Jared Polis announced that all 32 public colleges and universities in Colorado and several private institutions will allow students to apply for free on Tuesday, October 13 as part of the third annual Colorado Free Application Day: https://bit.ly/36gKyt7.

“Colorado Free Application Day allows students to activate their potential, pick their path and reach higher than they ever thought they could,” said Dr. Angie Paccione, executive director of CDHE. “With so many options available, whether you go to college or technical school, university or become an apprentice, there’s a program in Colorado that will unlock your future.”

During last year’s campaign, students turned in nearly 44,500 applications, half of which came from students of color and a third from first-generation students. Statewide, 2019 application submissions were up 100% compared to 2018.
