Health officials recommend residents get their annual influenza (also known as the flu) vaccination. Flu symptoms can start suddenly and may include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches or fatigue. Serious cases of the flu can require hospitalization and may lead to death in high-risk individuals.

The current flu season officially begins in October and ends in May 2021. September and October are good times to get a flu vaccine. Currently, the Health Department has plenty of flu vaccines available for children and adults. No resident will be denied a flu vaccine due to an inability to pay. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are preferred at both the main office in Greeley and the satellite clinic in Longmont. The Health Department also accepts some insurance plans. Other locations for flu vaccinations include pharmacies and doctor’s offices throughout Weld County.

The Health Department recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this disease. Though there are many different flu virus strains, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the main strains research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season.

Public Health officials further recommend people always cover their coughs, wash their hands, and if they get sick with the flu, to stay home from work or school to prevent spreading the illness to others.

To learn more about influenza, visit www.cdc.gov/flu. To make an appointment at the main Greeley office, call (970) 304-6420. For the satellite clinic in Longmont, call (720) 652-4238.
