Air Operations Play a Critical Role on the Cameron Peak Fire
Air operations play a crucial role in wildland fire operations. Helicopters have the ability to fly over remote and rough terrain with urgency to perform initial attack, reconnaissance missions, and respond to medical emergencies. They’re a perfect tool to support ground operations in the mountainous rugged terrain of the Cameron Peak Fire.
There are currently nine helicopters assigned to the Cameron Peak fire. The helicopters cater their tasks to the needs of the incident. Four of the K-MAX helicopters can carry supplies to remote locations via a sling load and carry water buckets to assist with attack operations. The three medium sized helicopters can carry up to 240 gallons of water per bucket. The light helicopters such as the AStar carry up 160 gallons of water. Lastly, there is a helitanker that can carry 1500 gallon.
It’s important to remember unauthorized drone flights can cause serious risk to wildland fire air operations and firefighter safety. “If you Fly, We Can’t”
