In the 1700s, Jonathan Swift said, “falsehood flies, and the truth comes limping after it.” A variation of this quote is even more relevant in our digital era: "A lie travels around the globe while the truth is putting on its shoes.” In a culture where context is often absent from breaking news and speed beats accuracy, it's incumbent on police leaders to actively provide information and address community concerns quickly.

Silence and waiting are not winning strategies. At Fort Collins Police Services, we want to build a long-term relationship with our community through strong communication, and we regularly share best practices to help other police agencies navigate difficult situations. A national online publication recently invited FCPS to provide guidance and recommendations on how to effectively communicate during times when all facts are not apparent and investigations are just getting started. We are very thankful here in Fort Collins to have Kate Kimble and the Public Information team helping keep our community informed while events are unfolding.
