Today, the Larimer County Department of Public Health and Environment provided us with updated information regarding their recommendations for the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. As a result of the guidance, Thompson School District has come to the difficult decision to transition to remote-only education for all Pre-K through 12th grade students through at least October 16th.
"One of the biggest concerns we have in Larimer County and for Colorado is the delay in test results," said Tom Gonzales, Larimer County Public Health Director. "We are seeing a substantial delay in COVID-19 test results from all clinical labs, including the state lab. For contact tracing to be effective, we must obtain timely test results within 2-3 days. The way we prevent outbreaks in our schools is to test, trace and isolate. With cases continuing to rise, counties across the state will struggle to conduct timely contact tracing with this delay in results. This is a state-wide problem that has caused us to reassess our school reopening plans. We continue to meet regularly with our schools in order to provide guidance and consultation. It is our recommendation at this time for our schools to consider delaying starts until we have faster turnaround times on our test results."
District staff will continue to partner with county officials as they work to reassess the situation, upon which additional guidance will be provided by September 15. "Timely test results assists us in effectively conducting contact tracing in our schools to protect our students and educators from the virus,” Gonzales added. "We are looking at a variety of options, including other clinical laboratory capacity in our community, to get our test results back faster. We will continue to work through this process with our schools."
While the latest guidance from county professionals provides clarity for our community, we also understand that this decision is disappointing for many of our families. Thompson School District is dedicated to offering a safe in-person educational option for our students and we will continue to work with health officials to help make that option a reality as soon as possible.
As a result of this adjustment, please note the following:
-Students who registered for in-person instruction will automatically be enrolled in a remote-learning option to begin the school year, which will be instructed and guided by TSD staff.
-Students who have enrolled in the district's full on-line educational model will not be impacted.
-Once guidance from health department officials indicates that a return to in-person instruction is viable, students will transition from the remote-learning environment to the planned building instruction. Students enrolled in the full on-line educational system will remain in that model.
-In the coming days and weeks, you will receive additional information from your child’s school with details regarding the start of the school year.
If you have not yet completed an "Instructional Model Intention Form" for each of your students, please do so by this Sunday, August 9th. Please note that by filling it out, you are formally indicating to the district which educational model you are registering for. If you have already filled out a form and have changed your mind, please fill out another one in its entirety.

Throughout the spring and summer months, many adjustments have needed to be made to our plans for the upcoming school year. We recognize that this has likely been a frustrating time for many in our district community as these plans continuously evolve. We truly appreciate your continued patience and flexibility as we move forward undeterred in providing the terrific educational experience that each of our students deserve.

We are almost finished installing a concrete trail along the west side of the Bein Athletic fields which will make this trail continuous from Spartan Ave to 10th, to the Neilson Greenway, to 5th, and back to Spartan. We have also widened and resurfaced the fitness and exercise trails on 10th and Spartan. By mid-August you will really be able to stretch your legs!

The Thompson School District Board of Education will return to an in-person meeting schedule beginning with its next scheduled session on Wednesday, August 5, at 6:00 PM. The meetings will be held in the Board room at the district's administration building, located at 800 S. Taft Avenue in Loveland. Regular meetings will also continue to be streamed live on the district's YouTube account ("Thompson School District.")
District staff members have worked with officials at the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment to develop procedures to help ensure safety for Board members, staff and attendees at the meetings. In particular, please note the following:
-By order of county health officials to ensure appropriate physical distancing, a maximum of eighteen (18) community members will be allowed to attend the in-person meetings. Admission into the Board room will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
-All audience members must wear masks or face coverings for the duration of their stay.
-District staff members will follow county health COVID-19 safety protocols. All visitors will receive a temperature check before entering the Board room. Community members who are exhibiting a fever above 100.4-degrees Fahrenheit will not be permitted to enter.
-Attendees will be socially distanced according to guidelines established by county health professionals.
-Public comment at the Board meetings may be provided either in-person or virtually. Community members who wish to provide their comments in-person must sign-up on site before the beginning of the meeting. Public comment may be provided virtually by calling (970) 613-6776 between the hours of 7:00 AM and 2:00 PM on the day of the meeting.
A copy of each regular meeting will be available for viewing on the district's YouTube channel shortly after its conclusion.
