The Weld County Department of Accounting has won its 37th Government Finance Off…

The Weld County Department of Accounting has won its 37th Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting award.

“One of the things I have strived for in my career as Controller is that the rules and regulations are followed,” said Weld County Controller Barbara Connolly. “This award showcases that we have done just that!”

According to the GFOA website, the certificate of achievement program was established in 1945 to encourage state and local governments to go beyond the minimum financial reporting standards accepted and prepare comprehensive reports that encourage transparency and full disclosure for the citizens Weld County serves.

“Receiving this award for 37 years is amazing,” said Barbara Kirkmeyer, Weld County Chair and Coordinator of Finance and Administration. “Thank you for the great job you do in the accounting department. We’re grateful you’re here and looking out for the county.”

To be eligible for the certificate, the accounting department must work diligently, ensuring Weld County’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) is completed on time and meets the standards of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). The county’s CAFR includes results of county financial transactions which the accounting department puts together in a clear and accurate manner. The GASB sets all the standards that the report must meet, including specific financial information to be included, and how the design of the report should look.

Once the CAFR is complete and submitted to the GFOA, it is judged alongside other state, local, and county financial reports submitted. A Special Review Committee, consisting of experts in public sector financial reporting, judges the reports submitted and awards the certificate to the CAFR which best meets program policy set by the GFOA and the review committee.
