Blue Mesa Fishing Report: 8-21-19

The unique/weird year continues, but there are still plenty of fish to be caught! Trolling opportunities are still present from first light until 8 or 8:30 most days. The majority of the salmon are hanging out 65’-90’ deep, but there are pockets of fish that are still feeding and in the 30-60’ range. Color and lure type vary daily, but one thing you can count on is changing plenty of lures until you get a combo that’s working.

YES, jigging has started and has been a consistent technique to target the salmon ( probably the most affective for the majority of the daylight hours), but like the trolling, it has not been for the faint at heart! The majority of the schools are no more than a half a boat’s length to a Boat’s length and diameter and the days of an entire floatilla seeing success on the same school are not apart of 2019’s plan! Schools are showing up in several locations, some schools are showing up in spots that we have never found schools before!

You will see the best success if you can find your own school. Once you find a school, the bite is not automatic. Cycling jig color and light color combos in addition to different corn scents will increase your success. In addition, figuring out the best cadence is the last part of the puzzle. If you can put all these pieces together, you will see moments that remind you of the past. However, the salmon of 2019 have a different attitude than fish of prior years… the salmon of 2019 are struggling with varying levels of gill lice. As a result, they aren’t as spunky, or aggressive, or angry as the salmon of the past and they take some work. There have been a few days where we see quite a few schools, but overall, just like trolling, the jig bite has been work. With that said, we are seeing some very nice quality with plenty of fish in the 18-19”+ range!!

Keep the gill lice situation in your prayers as only time will tell how it all plays out and kiss your Kokanee when you get them and show them some love!
