Our hearts are heavy with the news about one of our veteran firefighters losing their life this morning in a traffic collision. Our hearts, thoughts, and support go out to his family, friends, and fellow firefighters.

This morning at about 6:31 AM Greeley Police and Fire responded to the intersection of 14th Avenue and 5th Street on report of a traffic accident involving a motorcycle and an SUV, possibly a Suburban, with the suburban reportedly leaving the scene westbound on 5th Street. On arrival officers found a male adult down in the street along with a heavily damaged motorcycle. The male was unconscious and not breathing, and CPR was initiated immediately. Information about the run vehicle was issued and a Greeley Police officer observed the run vehicle and followed to a location north of the city, and contacted the driver. The vehicle, a suburban, had heavy, fresh damage to the front end. The driver was detained and the vehicle was impounded and taken to the Greeley Police Department evidence bay for obtaining a search warrant and processing.

The investigation of the accident remains open, however the driver of the SUV suburban has been placed into custody at the Weld County Sheriff’s Office on the following charges.

Arrested: Cody Shane Boetger
Charges: Hit and Run TA Resulting in Fatality- Felony 3
Driving Under Denial – Misdemeanor Traffic 1
Driving on Wrong Side of Roadway -Traffic Infraction

Additional charges are pending the results of a toxicology screen.
The Weld County Coroner has released the name of the victim in this traffic accident as Steven Michael Kuzik of Greeley. Steve Kuzik was a 21-year veteran firefighter for the Greeley Fire Department on his way to work. He was pronounced deceased at 7:12 AM at NCMC. Firefighter Kuzik was awarded the Firefighter of the Year for the Greeley Fire Department two years ago. We are keeping the family of firefighter Steve Kuzik and the Greeley Fire Department in our thoughts and prayers.
At this point in the investigation the evidence indicates suspect Boetger was westbound on 5th Street in the 1300 block when he veered into the eastbound lanes of travel. Victim Kuzik was driving eastbound on 5th Street in the 1300 block when they collided head-on. Boetger then fled the scene and continued westbound after the collision on 5th Street and was eventually contacted near Weld County Road 37 and AA Street by a Greeley Officer and taken into custody.
