While this chicken has a head, one who lost his and survived is being celebrated in Fruita, Colorado this weekend. “Mike the Headless Chicken Festival” begins today, ending tomorrow night. In September 1945, Mike was heading for the dinner table after a successful ax blow. Things didn’t go as planned for farmer Lloyd Olsen however. Mike was decapitated but his brain stem remained. Naturally Mike took off but did return home the next day. He lived for 18 months and saw many sights on tour as the “Headless Wonder Chicken”.
Our chicken, an ordinary looking fellow, is from the University Historic Photograph Collection.
