Greeley West High School’s AP Environmental students were one of few schools across the nation chosen by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to dissect Laysan Albatross boluses. Similar to an owl pellet, a bolus contains indigestible material that the albatross has thrown up. Dissecting a bolus helps scientists assess the health of our oceans.

Due to ocean currents and human neglect, there is a Pacific Ocean garbage patch that lies close to Midway Atoll Island where the Laysan Albatross lives. While the boluses should only contain remnants of squid and other sea life, dissections of boluses reveal an alarming amount of plastic in the Albatross’ diets.
