President John F. Kennedy declared the first Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, 1962, as a tribute to peace officers and in honor of peace officers who, through their courageous deeds, lost their lives or became disabled in the line of duty. This day has been observed in the United States annually ever since.

President Donald Trump called upon all Americans to observe Peace Officers Memorial Day on Wednesday and Police Week, May 12-18.

Governors are directing government agencies to fly the United States and state flags at half-staff Wednesday, May 15. Citizens are encouraged to do the same at their homes and businesses, in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.
